Money Saving Tip -- Homemade Laundry Detergent ~Jen
Ok so i know it sounds completely crazy and very time consuming to make you own laundry soap from scratch... and yeah the first time i made it, it was a learning experience, and it took some time.. but @ only $0.03 per load, you can't tell me its not worth the effort... so here's your shopping list, (sorry i don't have a link to coupons for these items)
Fels Naptha Laundry Bar Soap
Arm and Hammer Washing Soda (in the laundry aisle, not the baking aisle)
20 Mule Team Borax
You will also need:
a 2-3 gallon bucket
a sauce pan and stove
2 gallons of water
cheese grater
large stiring spoon
containers/jugs with lids that will hold 2 gallons of detergent - i use my old store bought detergent containers
several marbles
For one batch of detergent you will use:
1/3 bar Fels Naptha Soap, grated
1/2 cup Washing Soda (Arm and Hammer, NOT baking soda though!!)
1/2 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
Directions:
Mix grated Fels Naptha soap in a saucepan with 3 pints hot water and heat on low until dissolved. Stir in Washing Soda and Borax. Stir until all is dissolved, and remove from heat. Add 1 Quart Hot Water to 2 gallon Bucket. Add soap mixture, and mix well. Fill bucket completely with remaining water (to make a total of water for the entire batch 2 gallons), and mix well. Set aside for 24 hours, or until mixture thickens. You may add additional HOT water if the mixture becomes too thick. It should be the consistency of your store bought laundry soap/gel
Pour the mixture into your containers with lids, and put 5-10 marbles in each. Since you have to stir the mixture each time you use it, if you tighten the lid on your detergent bottle very tightly, the marbles work well to keep the mixture stirred when you shake the bottle! so just tighten the lid and shake it before each use!
Use 1/2 cup of mixture per load.
Makes 64 loads.
Cost per load $0.03
